Everyday Upkeep publishes general reference information about household maintenance. It is not professional advice, and it is not tailored to your specific home, appliance, model year or local conditions.
Know where the line is
Some jobs are genuinely DIY. Some are not. We do not publish instructions for, and you should not attempt without a licensed professional:
- Any work on gas lines, gas appliances or gas connections
- Work inside the main electrical panel, or any circuit you cannot positively isolate
- Structural work, including load-bearing walls, joists and roof structure
- Removal or disturbance of asbestos-containing material, or lead paint
- Refrigerant handling in air conditioners, heat pumps or refrigerators
- Work at height where a fall would be serious, including most roof and upper-gutter work
If a guide brings you to the edge of one of these, it will say so and stop there.
Chemicals and cleaning products
Follow the label on every product you use. Two warnings that come up repeatedly in household cleaning:
- Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia (present in many glass cleaners) — this produces chloramine gas.
- Never mix chlorine bleach with acids such as vinegar or descaling products — this releases chlorine gas.
Ventilate, wear appropriate protection, and test any cleaning method on a hidden area before applying it to a visible one.
Your warranty
Some maintenance procedures — opening a sealed housing, using a non-approved cleaning agent, altering a component — can void a manufacturer’s warranty. Check your warranty terms before you start. We are not responsible for voided warranties.
Results vary
Materials that look identical can behave very differently. A finish, a fabric blend or a stone sealer that responds well to one treatment may be damaged by it. Where a method carries a risk to certain materials, we name those materials — but the test patch is still yours to do.
