Natural stone is not one material. Granite, marble, travertine, limestone, slate and quartzite behave differently enough that a routine which is fine on one will visibly damage another — and the difference comes down to a single property: whether the stone contains calcium carbonate.
The distinction that governs everything

Calcareous stone dissolves in acid. Lemon juice, vinegar, wine, tomato, cola and many household cleaners will leave a dull mark within seconds of contact. That mark is an etch, not a stain: the surface has been chemically eaten, and no amount of cleaning removes it because there is nothing sitting on top to remove.
This is the single most important thing to know about a marble worktop, and it is the thing most people find out by accident.
Testing yours
On an offcut or a hidden edge, put a drop of vinegar or lemon juice. If it fizzes, or leaves a dull spot after a few minutes, the stone is calcareous. Rinse immediately.
Etch versus stain
These need opposite treatments, and confusing them wastes effort.
- An etch is a dull, lighter patch — surface damage. You feel nothing, you see a change in sheen. Cleaning does nothing. It is fixed by re-polishing.
- A stain is a darker patch — something absorbed into the pores. It is fixed by drawing the substance back out.
Test: wet the mark with water. If it disappears while wet and returns as it dries, it is a stain. If it stays visible when wet, it is an etch.
Everyday cleaning
- Wipe with a soft cloth and warm water with a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap, or a stone-specific cleaner.
- Rinse with clean water — soap residue builds into a film that dulls the surface.
- Dry with a soft cloth. Air-drying leaves water spots, especially in hard water areas.
Never use on natural stone
- Vinegar, lemon, or any acidic cleaner
- Bleach and ammonia — they strip sealer and can discolour
- Bathroom, tub-and-tile, or grout cleaners — nearly all are acidic or strongly alkaline
- Abrasive creams, scouring pads, and melamine sponges — all are abrasive enough to dull polished stone
Sealing
Sealer does not make stone stain-proof. It is an impregnator that slows absorption, giving you time to wipe a spill before it soaks in.
The water test
Put a tablespoon of water on the surface and leave it 15 minutes. Wipe it up.
- No dark mark — sealed and working.
- A dark patch that fades as it dries — the stone is absorbing. Time to reseal.
Applying it
- Clean thoroughly and let it dry completely — 24 hours is not excessive for a dense stone.
- Apply an impregnating sealer evenly with a cloth or a foam applicator.
- Let it dwell for the time on the tin, usually 10 to 15 minutes.
- Buff off all excess before it dries. Sealer left to dry on the surface leaves a hazy film that has to be removed with solvent.
- Second coat if the instructions call for it. Full cure is typically 24 to 48 hours before heavy use.

Removing stains: the poultice method
A poultice is an absorbent paste that draws the stain back out as it dries. Match the liquid to the stain type:

- Mix the liquid with an absorbent powder — talc, kaolin, or plain flour — to a peanut-butter consistency.
- Spread it about 5 mm thick over the stain, extending an inch beyond it.
- Cover with cling film taped at the edges, and pierce a few small holes.
- Leave 24 to 48 hours to dry fully. The drying is what pulls the stain up.
- Scrape off with a plastic scraper, rinse, dry. Deep stains may need two or three applications.
Do not test hydrogen peroxide on dark stone without checking a hidden area first — it can lighten some.
Fixing an etch
Light etching on polished marble responds to a marble polishing powder — a fine abrasive that re-polishes the damaged area. Damp the surface, work the powder in with a damp cloth or a low-speed buffing pad, and blend outward past the edge of the mark so there is no visible boundary.
Deep etching, and any etching on a honed finish where blending is harder, is a job for a stone restoration specialist. Attempting it with progressively coarser abrasives usually produces a larger dull patch than you started with.
Habits that prevent most of it
- Coasters under everything, especially wine, citrus and anything carbonated
- Trivets under hot pans. Granite tolerates heat well, but thermal shock can crack any stone, and heat degrades sealer
- Chopping boards always. Knives scratch stone and stone destroys knife edges
- Wipe spills immediately — with acids on calcareous stone, “immediately” means seconds
- Do not stand or sit on the worktop. Stone is strong in compression and weak in bending, and the span over a dishwasher or a sink cut-out is where it breaks
Common questions
How do I tell an etch from a stain?
