Chapter 37

Hannah had eventually injected the medicine into Herman, her hands trembling as the deed was done. Cain, believing that the matter would soon be exposed, had hired a hitman to silence her.

Nash had pieced together the entire story, but to confirm it, he needed to confront Cain himself.

He helped the delivery man to his feet. “What’s your name?” Nash asked, his voice steady.

“Hugo Zabinski,” the man answered quietly.

“There’s someone behind the deaths of your son and sister-in-law. I’ll investigate and make sure the mastermind is brought to justice,” Nash said confidently. “But you shouldn’t involve yourself in this anymore.”

Hugo’s eyes darkened with mistrust. “You’re all in this together. I won’t believe your nonsense!” His hatred for the Lewises burned fiercely, and since Nash was Hera’s fiancé, he saw no reason to trust him.

“If you continue to interfere, not only will you fail to get your revenge, but you’ll also bring death upon yourself—and your wife,” Nash said, his tone colder now, his eyes narrowing.

Hugo’s anger faltered for a moment as he absorbed the weight of Nash’s words. The man before him was no ordinary person; Nash’s calm demeanor spoke volumes. Hugo was an ordinary delivery man, and the Lewises were a powerful force, one he couldn’t hope to challenge.

The Lewises had the resources to erase him without a second thought. But if he were to die, what would happen to his wife and elderly parents?

After a long silence, Hugo looked up at Nash, a hesitant glint of fear in his eyes. “What should I do then?”

Nash responded with precision. “First, take your wife and hide for a while.”

Still, doubt lingered in Nash’s mind. Why would Cain go so far as to try and kill his own brother? Was it simply to help Hubert’s family gain control of the Lewises’ assets, or was there something deeper at play? If there were another motive, the entire Lewis household could be on the brink of disaster.

Hugo, kneeling before him now, pleaded, “Mr. Calcraft, please, ensure the culprit is sent to prison. If you don’t, my son and sister-in-law will never rest in peace.”

Nash nodded solemnly. “I’ll do everything I can.”

After seeing Hugo off, the night had already fallen.

Nash retrieved a bag from the corner of the room. Inside was a set of black tactical gear, a white smiling face mask, and a blood-red diamond-shaped dagger—his standard equipment for assassination missions. On the dark web’s assassin leaderboard, he was known as To-Smiling Death.

But tonight, he wasn’t here for killing.

It was nearly midnight when Nash stood before the mirror, staring at the smiling face mask that reflected back at him. It felt surreal. It had been four years since he last wore this outfit.

His phone buzzed on the bed, the screen lighting up. It was a video call from Hera.

He quickly removed the mask, tossed it aside, and climbed into bed. He only showed his head, pretending to be sleepy as he answered the call.

Hera appeared on the screen, sitting on her bed in a pink pajama set. She seemed a little embarrassed. “Did I wake you up, Nash?”

Nash yawned dramatically. “It’s good that you’re self-aware. Why aren’t you asleep?”

Hera pursed her lips, her voice soft. “I can’t sleep…”

Nash noticed the worry clouding her expression. With a gentle smile, he asked, “Is something on your mind?”

Hera hesitated, then said, “Well… I hope you won’t get angry when I tell you…”

“Go ahead,” Nash encouraged.

“My grandfather wants me to marry Hunter Hill. The Hills are coming to propose to me on my birthday.”

Nash’s face remained neutral. “Oh.”

Hera frowned, her lips pouting. “Oh? That’s all you have to say?”

“It’s just a proposal, not a wedding,” Nash laughed lightly, his tone teasing.

Hera’s eyes darkened a little. “Come on, you’re my fiancé now. Don’t you feel even a hint of jealousy?”

Nash could hear the underlying disappointment in her voice, but he replied playfully, “You know, it’s just part of the job. I’m doing what my master assigned me to do. I’m not about to fall for you, if that’s what you mean.”

Her heart sank at his words, the weight of them sinking in. “I understand,” she said quietly, trying to mask her hurt. “You’re just completing the task. You won’t really develop feelings for me, right?”
