Almost everyone uses too much laundry detergent. The reason is structural rather than careless: the cap is oversized, the fill lines are hard to read, and the packaging says “fill to line 2 for a normal load” without telling you what a normal load is or how hard your water is.
The consequences are not just wasted money. Excess detergent is the root cause of most washing machine smells, stiff towels, dull colours, and the residue that makes clothes irritate sensitive skin.
What too much actually does
- It does not rinse away. Modern high-efficiency machines use a fraction of the water of an old top-loader. There is not enough water to carry off surplus surfactant, so it stays in the fabric.
- Suds cushion the load. Cleaning happens through mechanical action — fabric rubbing against fabric. Excess foam pads that action and makes the wash less effective.
- It feeds the machine’s biofilm. Residue in the drum, gasket and dispenser is what grows the smell people then blame on the machine.
- It leaves clothes stiff and grey. Detergent film attracts soil, so whites go dull and towels lose absorbency.
The three variables
Every dosing instruction on a bottle assumes a medium load, medium soil, medium water hardness. Adjust for all three.
1. Load size
The honest measure: a correctly filled drum is loose enough that you can fit a flat hand into the gap at the top. Packed tight is overloaded — the clothes cannot tumble, so they do not clean regardless of dose.
2. Soil level
Most household laundry is lightly soiled — worn once, no visible dirt, no heavy odour. Lightly soiled laundry needs roughly half the stated dose. Genuinely dirty laundry — gardening, sport, work clothes — needs the full dose.
3. Water hardness
This is the variable people ignore and it has the largest effect. Detergent has to neutralise the calcium and magnesium in hard water before any of it is available to clean, which is why hard-water areas need more. In soft water areas, the stated dose is often double what is needed.

Two tests that tell you where you stand
The suds test
Watch the drum during the main wash. You want to see a thin ring of suds, not a foam-filled window. Heavy foam means you are over-dosing.
The rinse test
Take a clean, dry towel from the wash. Rub it vigorously between your hands over a dark surface, or wet a small section and squeeze. If you see foam, or the water goes cloudy, detergent is still in the fibres.
To reset a wardrobe full of residue: run everything through a wash cycle with no detergent at all, on the hottest temperature the fabric allows. It usually takes two such washes before towels feel properly absorbent again.
Form matters less than people think

Whatever the form, use a detergent labelled for high-efficiency machines if you have one. Non-HE detergent is formulated to foam in a large volume of water and will over-suds badly in an HE drum.
Fabric softener
Softener works by depositing a waxy cationic layer on fibres. That layer is what makes fabric feel soft, and it is also what:
- Reduces towel absorbency — measurably, and cumulatively
- Coats technical and sportswear, destroying its wicking
- Reduces the flame resistance of children’s sleepwear
- Builds up in the dispenser and drum, feeding the same biofilm as excess detergent
Alternatives that do most of the same job: wool dryer balls, or white vinegar in the rinse compartment — half a cup, which acts as a rinse aid and helps clear detergent residue. Never put vinegar and chlorine bleach in the same wash.
A working routine
- Look up your water hardness once, and write the adjustment on the detergent bottle in marker.
- Start at half the stated dose for everyday lightly soiled loads.
- Run the suds test on the next wash and adjust from there.
- Use the full dose only for genuinely dirty loads.
- Drop fabric softener, or reserve it for a fraction of loads.
- Leave the door and drawer ajar between washes.
Most households find they settle at somewhere between a third and a half of what they were using, with cleaner-feeling laundry and a machine that stops smelling.
