Stain removal is not one skill. It is four, because there are four categories of stain and each responds to a different chemistry. Treating a grease stain like a protein stain wastes time; treating a protein stain like a grease stain sets it permanently.
The four categories

Combination stains — gravy is protein and grease; lipstick is oil and dye — are treated in order: protein first with cold water, grease second, dye last. Doing it the other way sets the protein with the heat you used on the grease.
The universal rules
- Fresh stains come out. Old stains often do not. Nothing else you do matters as much as speed.
- Blot, do not rub. Rubbing pushes the stain into the fibres and can felt or pill the fabric.
- Cold water first, always, unless you know for certain the stain is not protein.
- Work from the back of the fabric, pushing the stain out the way it came in rather than through the weave.
- Never tumble dry a garment with a stain still visible. Dryer heat is the most reliable way to make a removable stain permanent. Check before it goes in, every time.
- Test on a hidden seam before using anything stronger than detergent.

The three things that make stains permanent
Heat on protein
Blood, egg, milk and sweat contain proteins that coagulate with heat and bond to the fibre. Hot water, a warm iron, or a tumble dryer will lock them in. Cold water, always, until you are certain the protein is gone.
Chlorine bleach on rust
Bleach oxidises iron and turns a removable rust mark into a permanent orange-brown one. Use an acid-based rust remover instead.
The dryer
Worth stating twice because it is the most common single cause of permanent stains in a normal household. Air-dry anything you have treated, check it in good light, and re-treat before it ever sees heat.
Fabric exceptions
- Wool and silk: no oxygen bleach, no chlorine bleach, no enzyme detergent — enzymes digest protein, and wool and silk are protein. Use a wool-specific detergent and cool water
- Elastane blends: no chlorine bleach; it destroys the elastic
- Leather and suede: almost nothing here applies. Blot, and take it to a specialist
- Dry-clean-only: blot, do not treat, and tell the cleaner what the stain is. That information genuinely changes what they use
