The short answer

Why enzymatic cleaner is not optional
Urine contains urea, urochrome and uric acid. The first two wash out readily. Uric acid forms crystals that bind to surfaces, are insoluble in water, and reactivate as odour whenever humidity rises — which is why a spot that seemed fixed smells again on a damp day.
Enzymatic cleaners contain enzymes that break those crystals down. Nothing else does. Vinegar masks and neutralises some ammonia smell; bleach and general-purpose cleaners do nothing to the crystals at all.
Two rules that matter more than the product choice:
- Never use ammonia-based cleaners on pet urine. Urine breaks down into ammonia, so an ammonia cleaner smells to a dog like the spot is still marked, and invites repeat marking.
- Do not apply enzymatic cleaner after other chemicals. Bleach and strong detergents denature the enzymes. If you have already used something else, rinse thoroughly with plain water and let it dry first.
Act fast, then act thoroughly
- Blot, do not rub. Layers of paper towel, pressed down hard, standing on them if it is carpet. Repeat with dry towels until they come up nearly dry.
- Flush with a little cold water and blot again to dilute what remains.
- Apply enzymatic cleaner generously. It has to reach as deep as the urine did, which on carpet means saturating past the backing.
- Leave it wet for the time on the bottle — usually 10 to 15 minutes, sometimes far longer. Enzymes need contact time and moisture to work. Covering the area with a damp towel stops it drying out too fast.
- Blot dry and let it air dry fully. Do not use heat: a hair dryer or a steam cleaner will set any protein residue permanently.

The dark stain in hardwood
A black or grey patch on wood means the urine has passed through the finish and reacted with tannins in the timber. Surface cleaning will not touch it. Options are sanding the area back and refinishing, or oxalic acid wood bleach, and neither is reliable on deep staining. On a valuable floor, this is a job for a flooring specialist.
Finding what you cannot see
A UV torch shows dried urine as a dull yellow-green fluorescence in a dark room. It is the only practical way to find old accidents, and it routinely finds several more than anyone expected — particularly along skirting boards and on the vertical faces of furniture legs.
Mark each spot with tape while the light is on, because they are invisible again as soon as you switch it off.
When the subfloor is the problem
Repeated accidents in one place saturate the underlay and the subfloor beneath. At that point no surface treatment will fix it — the source is under the floor covering. On carpet that means lifting the carpet, replacing the underlay in that area, sealing the subfloor with a stain-blocking primer, and re-laying. It is disruptive and it is the only thing that works.
