Chapter 81
Nash quickly pulled his shirt back down and, with a casual shrug, said, “I’ve been sleeping the whole day. If you don’t believe me, go check the surveillance cameras!”
Lauren stood still, stunned into silence for a moment. Something was definitely off here…
She began to search the apartment, checking every corner, but she couldn’t find any trace of Nash’s Smiling Grim Reaper outfit.
As she continued to ponder, her phone rang. It was Harrison. “The people from Drake Group have come to our company for an inspection. They’re ready to pay a 150 million deposit. Hurry back to the company!”
Lauren let out a sigh. “Alright… I’ll come back right away!”
She hung up the phone and turned her gaze back to Nash. Words seemed to elude her, and after a brief pause, she finally asked, “When do you plan to register your marriage with Hera?”
Nash shrugged again, his expression nonchalant. “I can do it anytime. It just depends on whether Mr. Lewis agrees and whether Hera is willing.”
Lauren said nothing more. With a final look at Nash, she turned to leave the apartment. Even though Nash was trying to hide the truth, her instincts told her something wasn’t right.
Once outside the building, she paused at the front desk. “Miss, is there a problem with the surveillance in this building?”
The receptionist smiled politely. “Yes, but don’t worry. The maintenance department is working on it, and everything should be restored to normal tonight!”
“Thank you!” Lauren said, expressing her gratitude before walking out without a second glance.
Nash had claimed that he’d been sleeping all day at home and suggested she check the surveillance if she didn’t believe him. The only logical explanation for that was that he’d tampered with the footage to hide any traces of his activities.
Such a trick might fool a child, but not her.
Lauren reflected on the situation. Nash must have had his reasons for hiding his identity, especially considering his connection to the Smiling Grim Reaper. The fewer people who knew about it, the better.
Back in the apartment, Nash carefully peeled off the fake skin he had applied to his abdomen and continued stitching up the wound. Without anesthesia, it took him ten minutes to sew 81 stitches into his skin.
He surveyed the wound on his abdomen, a jagged line that resembled a centipede. He sighed in frustration. “I’ve been focusing so much on improving my internal energy that I’ve neglected my body-forging technique. Master taught me this, and I’ve nearly forgotten it… I need to find a way to improve my body-forging skills.”
A true cultivator would refine both their internal energy and their physical form. While Nash’s internal energy had reached its peak, his physical body was still somewhat fragile. Had he made progress with his body-forging technique, he might not have suffered the injury today.
After tending to his wound, Nash sat cross-legged on the bed, beginning to cultivate his energy for healing.
Meanwhile, at the Hills’ grand mansion in Jonford, Hunter Hill was complaining to his grandfather with a tone of grievance. He was supposed to propose to the Lewises, but Hera was still treating him coldly.
Gaspard Hill, Hunter’s grandfather, sat calmly, dressed in traditional white attire, his thick white beard hanging down to his chest. He stroked his beard thoughtfully. “Fate has its own timing. If the time isn’t right, don’t force it. The Lewises have no power or influence, and that Hera girl isn’t worthy of my dear grandson.”
Although the Lewises had two companies, Herman’s assets didn’t even amount to 1.5 billion dollars. The Lewises were still far from being a top-tier family. Gaspard believed Hunter should marry someone from a more suitable background.
Hunter’s father, Geoffrey Hill, spoke up, “Dad, I think Hunter must marry Hera Lewis! First, Helena Lewis is now Kai Watson’s girlfriend. You know the power the Watsons hold. Second, Baroque just secured a major project from Drake Group, which means they’ve established a relationship with the Lee family. The Watsons and the Lees are both powerful forces. With the right connections, the Lewises have a chance to become a giant in Jonford.”
Hunter nodded in agreement, though still disgruntled. “It’s all that wretched Skadi’s fault. She’s always been in my way when it comes to getting close to Hera. If it weren’t for her, I’d have succeeded by now!”
Geoffrey’s face darkened. “Skadi’s grandfather is the chairman of the Martial Arts Association. That girl is indeed troublesome.”
Gaspard stroked his beard, sneering. “She’s just an inexperienced little girl. If I were to make a move, she wouldn’t be able to see the light of day tomorrow…”
