Chapter_258
The weight of their mission seemed to stretch on endlessly as Nash and Xeno stood at Jonford Airport, waiting for Yvonne. Hours passed, yet there was no sign of her. The time seemed to slip by unnoticed, filled with the hum of crowded travelers and the occasional mutter of frustration.
“Mr. Nash, should we ask Mr. Skye to check the airline ticket information? Maybe something came up, and Ms. Mare didn’t board the plane?” Xeno suggested, tapping away on his phone.
Nash hesitated, looking at the bustling crowd, then reluctantly agreed. “That seems to be the only option.”
Just as he was about to suggest they take further steps, another wave of passengers emerged from the terminal. Among them, a small girl in a light pink princess dress caught Nash’s attention. She looked around curiously, her eyes wide with wonder, while a middle-aged man with a square face and a goatee pulled along two suitcases—one pink, one black.
The girl held a stuffed Winnie the Pooh toy in her arms, her pigtails bouncing with each step. Her voice, high-pitched with innocence, reached Nash’s ears. “Uncle James, will Aunt Lauren come to pick us up?”
The man, clearly a relative, chuckled warmly. “Of course. Your aunt and your father were the most mischievous when they were young. They were extremely close!”
At that moment, James’ eyes locked onto the sign held by Xeno, and his expression darkened in an instant. Xeno, noticing the shift, raised the sign with Yvonne’s name higher.
James made his way toward the two men, his gaze flicking between them, before asking, “Where’s Lauren? Why didn’t she come?”
Yvonne’s face fell, her small shoulders sagging in disappointment as she realized her aunt wasn’t there to greet her.
Noticing James’ displeasure, Nash quickly intervened. “Mom’s too busy to make it, so she sent me to pick up Yvonne instead.”
James’ eyes narrowed, his suspicion evident. “Mom? Are you Lauren’s son?”
Nash smiled, trying to put the man at ease. “I’m Lauren’s son-in-law, Nash.”
A flicker of surprise crossed James’ face. “Hera’s married?”
Nash, feeling a subtle sense of pride, nodded and showed off his wedding ring. “Yes, we’re married.”
James stood still for a moment, processing this new information. His gaze shifted, and after a long silence, he muttered, “Take us to the Lewis household first.”
As Xeno stepped forward to assist with the luggage, James waved him off. “No need, I can manage.”
With a rueful smile, Xeno discarded the sign in a nearby trash can.
Yvonne, still processing everything around her, turned to Nash with a thoughtful look. “So, if you’re my cousin Hera’s husband, should I just call you Nash?”
Nash chuckled softly. “That depends on you.”
Yvonne’s mood brightened, and she smiled. “Well, I’m in a good mood! How did you meet my cousin?”
Nash’s smile faltered slightly. That was a question he hadn’t fully prepared for. How should he explain their complicated relationship?
He couldn’t exactly tell her about the forced marriage contract with Helena, nor could he delve into the fact that Hera had married him out of necessity rather than choice. No, he had to protect Hera’s reputation, especially in front of the Mares.
“That’s a long story,” he said carefully. “You can ask your cousin when we get home.”
An hour later, the car turned into the familiar roads of Royal Bay. Xeno, ever the one for conversation, glanced at Nash with a grin. “Walter really took drastic measures this time, even taking back Kai’s villa!”
Nash’s expression hardened for a moment, his mind flashing back to the tension surrounding the villa. Walter, despite all his authority, had acted swiftly and decisively against Kai. This wasn’t just about business—it was personal.
“No matter how tough Walter is, he’s still Kai’s grandfather,” Nash said, his voice tinged with a quiet gravity. “If someone else were to deal with him, Kai would be in danger.”
Xeno nodded, the weight of his words sinking in. There were layers to this situation, far more than just business. There were emotions, family ties, and unspoken rivalries that had been brewing for years.
As the car continued its drive through the gates of the Lewis household, Nash couldn’t shake the feeling that things were only beginning to unravel. What was happening with Kai’s assets? And how deep did this intrigue go? He had a sinking feeling that the answers might be far more complicated—and dangerous—than he had ever imagined.
