Chapter 127
Hera’s mind was filled with determination as she sought a way to persuade her grandfather to abandon his plan to marry her off to the Hills. The idea of being tied to them, especially after everything that had happened, was unbearable.
“What do you mean?” Herman asked, his voice laced with confusion.
Without hesitation, Hera launched into the recounting of the terrifying kidnapping she and Skadi had endured at the hands of Crow. Her words came out swiftly, driven by the urgency to make her grandfather understand the gravity of the situation.
“Are you saying they wanted to kill Skadi? That… That seems improbable, right?” Herman’s disbelief was palpable as he processed the shock of her story.
Hera, unwavering in her conviction, nodded firmly. “It’s absolutely true. Hunter himself admitted it. If Nash hadn’t arrived in time to save us, the consequences would have been unimaginable.”
Her words seemed to resonate with Herman, but before the conversation could continue, Helena, who had been listening intently, opened her mouth to speak. She paused mid-sentence, her mind racing. She remembered that Crow from Causeway Bay had been found dead, and Nash’s involvement in saving Hera and Skadi clicked into place. If Nash killed Crow, she thought, then that meant he had crossed Howard from the Green Bamboo Association.
Helena’s gaze shifted to Nash, who met her eyes with an unreadable expression. The realization made her blood run cold. Nash had killed Crow, and that act would not go unnoticed by those in power.
“What is it?” Herman’s voice broke through her thoughts, and he looked toward her with concern.
Helena quickly composed herself, shaking her head. “N-Nothing…”
But deep down, the revelation was a weight she couldn’t ignore. Nash’s actions had set off a chain of events that would have far-reaching consequences. And in her mind, the consequences would not only be felt by Nash but by everyone around him.
“Since the Hills aren’t suitable, then reject their betrothal gifts!” Helena said, her tone laced with malice as she spoke about the Hills.
Herman, ever the pragmatist, responded with a measured calm. “However, you must be careful since Baroque is still involved in small collaborations with the Hills. If this matter becomes a hindrance to Drake Group’s orders, the loss will outweigh the gain.”
Hera’s family exchanged glances, a pleased smile crossing their faces at Herman’s words. They knew the Hills would have to be dealt with carefully, but the prospect of severing ties with them felt like a small victory.
After the dinner ended, everyone returned to their respective rooms. Maria, always the gracious hostess, arranged a guest room for Nash. Hera and Nash, despite being in the same house, could only communicate through their phones, the separation between them serving as a reminder of the tension that loomed.
Meanwhile, at the Hills Estate, the atmosphere was anything but calm. Haspard had just returned from a business trip, only to be met with news that would stir the pot. As soon as he walked into his study, he slammed his hand on the desk, his anger evident.
“This is absolutely outrageous! I was only away from Jonford for one day, and such a thing had happened… Do the Lees think nothing of us?”
Geoffrey, standing nearby, sighed deeply, his expression reflecting his frustration. “The Lees have the Skyes and the warden backing them. I’m afraid even the Watsons can’t do anything about them.”
The news that Hunter had been beaten and left with broken ribs was the catalyst for Haspard’s fury. As soon as Hunter had been admitted to the hospital, he received a call from the hospital that revealed the Lees were behind the attack. Despite the violence, Haspard knew he couldn’t risk angering the Lees further.
“This is all caused by Hera Lewis. I get that we don’t dare to offend the Lees, but can’t we do something about the Lewises?” Haspard’s frustration was evident, his voice tinged with a sense of helplessness.
Geoffrey, weary of the situation, bitterly laughed. “Helena Lewis’s boyfriend is Kai Watson, and Baroque, Hera’s family’s company, just signed a huge 300 million dollar project with Drake Group!”
At the mention of Baroque and Drake Group, Haspard slammed his fist onto the desk in frustration. The realization that they were entangled with such powerful forces left them with little room to maneuver. Even with his wealth and influence, there was little Haspard could do without risking everything.
Geoffrey sighed. “We should ask Hunt to give up on Hera, or it’ll eventually backfire!”
Though Geoffrey shared his father’s desire for revenge, the threat posed by the Lewises’ backing was undeniable. They were powerless in the face of such formidable enemies.
Haspard, however, remained stubborn. He closed his eyes, contemplating the situation, before finally speaking again. “I heard from Hunt that Hera has a boyfriend now. Who is that man?”
Geoffrey furrowed his brow as he tried to recall what he had heard. “I heard that he seems to be from the mountains…”
Haspard sneered, a sharp laugh escaping his lips. “I refuse to believe that my grandson can’t compete with a hillbilly!”
His words, though dismissive, betrayed a deeper concern. The Hills were rich, powerful, and influential. Hunter, as their heir, was no stranger to luxury and privilege. He could not fathom that someone from humble beginnings, like Nash, could be a threat to their empire.
Geoffrey, sensing his father’s stubbornness, grew anxious. “Dad, don’t be stubborn anymore. There are many good women in the world. We can easily arrange a marriage for Hunt!”
But Haspard remained fixed on his desire for control, refusing to see beyond his own arrogance. The family’s tangled web of power, pride, and greed was only getting more complicated—and the consequences of their actions were about to unfold in ways they never expected.
