Chapter 198
“S… sure…” The old man’s words were hesitant, his authority crumbling in the face of Nash’s overwhelming strength. With a hasty step, he retreated into the cabin, opening the electronic gate to the cemetery.
As the gate creaked open, a chill seemed to descend over the air. The cemetery was barely illuminated by a few scattered, dim streetlamps, casting long shadows that stretched eerily across the gravestones. The atmosphere felt heavy, suffused with an unsettling stillness that made even the bravest hesitate.
Nash, Angelica, and Felicity stepped into the cemetery, each of them feeling the weight of the place. They noticed a few local residents kneeling before ancient tombstones, their heads bowed as they burned incense in reverence. The scene was one of solemnity, but the graveyard’s haunting atmosphere made it feel all the more oppressive.
Felicity turned to Angelica and Nash. “Can you find the girl’s grave?”
Angelica shook her head, her voice low. “We don’t even know her name.”
Nash, ever pragmatic, sighed lightly. “Let’s just find a place to hide and wait for Wesley.”
The three of them ventured deeper into the cemetery, past rows of weathered tombstones. Eventually, they came to a semicircular-shaped monument and crouched behind it. With the night settling in around them, they felt it was safe enough to remain hidden.
Felicity spotted some dried weeds on the ground and sat down cross-legged, closing her eyes as she tried to relax. Angelica and Felicity occupied themselves with their phones, trying to pass the time.
“It’s almost twelve. Do you think Wesley is still coming?” Felicity murmured, glancing at her phone’s battery, now dangerously low.
The minutes stretched on, the quiet of the cemetery almost suffocating.
Angelica let out a soft sigh. “Let’s just wait. Wesley bought a plane ticket for tomorrow, so we might have to wait until then.”
The air felt thicker as the hours wore on, and Felicity couldn’t shake the unease that had settled deep within her. As much as she tried to focus on her phone, her nerves kept getting the better of her. “It’s kind of eerie out here. I mean, I’m Sagen’s Deputy Chief Inspector, but being in a cemetery at night… it’s a little unnerving.”
Angelica glanced around, her eyes flicking to the darkened paths. “I get it. It’s creepy here. But it’s all part of the job, right?”
Felicity let out a half-hearted laugh, though it was clear she was still on edge. “Yeah, sure. I mean, it’s not like I’m scared or anything.”
Angelica caught her expression and smiled teasingly. “If you’re really not scared, then why don’t you ask Nash for his contact info?”
Felicity’s face flushed a bright red, her eyes widening in surprise. “What do you mean?”
“Come on, you can’t tell me you haven’t noticed how strong he is. He’s got the looks, too. What’s not to like?”
Felicity pouted, a little embarrassed. “The more friends you have, the more options you have in life. You never know when one of them will be useful.”
Angelica stifled a laugh. “Well, I’m not that close to him. But if you really want his contact info, why don’t you ask him yourself?”
Felicity rolled her eyes but smiled, her playful mood returning. “Fine. I bet he won’t even talk to me.”
The night grew quieter, and soon, both women found themselves leaning against each other, fighting the drowsiness that threatened to overtake them. The cemetery around them was calm, save for the rustling of the leaves in the breeze.
At around two in the morning, a shift in the air caused Nash to open his eyes slowly, his gaze sharp and alert.
“Someone’s coming…” he whispered.
Felicity and Angelica jolted awake, immediately scanning the cemetery. They peered through the darkness, their eyes narrowing as they watched for any sign of movement.
A dark figure emerged from the shadows, walking towards a nearby modern-looking tombstone. The figure was tall and burly, holding flowers in one hand and a bundle of joss paper in the other. He knelt before the grave, placing the flowers down before lighting the offerings. The faint light from the streetlamps flickered as the figure burned the joss paper in reverence.
Angelica leaned closer to Felicity, whispering nervously. “Is… is that Wesley?”
Felicity, always one to take charge, snapped into action. “Angelica, go around the back and block the entrance. I’m going to grab him.”
Angelica didn’t hesitate. “Alright…”
Despite her position as a no-name inspector, Angelica knew the chain of command. Felicity was the Deputy Chief Inspector, and in this situation, it was natural for Angelica to follow her lead.
They made their move, creeping closer, but Nash held up a hand, his expression suddenly serious. “Hold on… there’s a possibility that’s not Wesley.”
Both women froze, their eyes wide in confusion.
“Wesley is a very cautious man,” Nash continued in a low tone. “He’s not one to be so reckless. He probably hired someone to test the waters first. There’s no way he would visit his first girlfriend’s grave himself.”
The realization hit Felicity like a ton of bricks. Whoever this man was, he wasn’t Wesley. The mystery deepened as they watched the man from a distance, uncertain of his true intentions.
