Chapter 189
The proprietor’s face drained of color when he heard the name ‘Wesley,’ his eyes widening in horror. A deep, cold silence settled over the group as Nash’s calm voice cut through the tension.
Jupiter’s lips curled into a small smile, but there was no warmth in it. “Wesley, do you still want to argue?”
Kale’s cold voice answered, filled with defiance. “I told you, I’m Kale, not Wesley.” His gaze turned sharp, and he added, “I’ll definitely report you for abusing your power!”
Angelica scoffed, her irritation bubbling over. “Damn this stubborn fool.”
Nash sighed, his tone unexpectedly soft. “Let him go. He’s not Wesley.”
Jupiter and Angelica exchanged confused looks, their minds struggling to make sense of what they were hearing.
Who was Nash kidding? The expressions on both the proprietor’s and Kale’s faces, as well as their shared tension, pointed directly to the fact that Kale was Wesley. Yet Nash was asking them to release him?
Jupiter couldn’t help but question, “Captain Holt, if he’s really Wesley, do you think a man in his 40s and a trainee inspector like me would be able to catch him?”
Nash didn’t flinch at the skepticism in Jupiter’s voice. “It’s true. More than a dozen senior inspectors tried to monitor Wesley and still failed to catch him. He’s killed before. At 35, he’s in his prime, and he’s not someone you and Angelica are capable of capturing.”
Jupiter’s frown deepened, his thoughts racing. He couldn’t argue with Nash’s point. Wesley had evaded capture time and time again, even committing violent acts to escape. It was clear that, if he was indeed Wesley, there was no chance of taking him down so easily.
But the connection between Wesley and the man in front of them was undeniable. Kale’s features were far too similar to Wesley’s, and the same person they’d identified near the Lewis family’s estate now stood before them.
As the tension thickened, the proprietor suddenly spoke, his voice trembling with fear and confusion. “Wesley… The one you’re looking for, he’s my son.”
Jupiter’s frown deepened as he processed the words. “I’ve met all of Wesley’s family. How could he be your son?”
Angelica, equally overwhelmed by the web of relationships, asked, “Wesley is your son! Kale is the son of your wife’s sister! In other words, Kale and Wesley are cousins. So, why did Kale pretend to be Wesley?”
The proprietor remained silent, his eyes glued to the ground as if he couldn’t face the truth.
Nash’s voice broke through the heavy air. “Your son, Wesley, placed bombs in my girlfriend’s house and killed more than 50 people.”
The proprietor’s face turned ghostly white. “What?”
Kale slowly closed his eyes, his expression unreadable, but the tightness of his jaw betrayed the hint of guilt or something far darker. The proprietor, however, seemed to be hearing it all for the first time.
Nash took a breath and continued, “Wesley was overseas for a few years. He joined a mercenary group, and when he came back, someone hired him to hurt the Lewis family.” He paused, eyes narrowing as he pieced everything together. “I’m certain that Wesley was the sniper that day. He’s the one who bombed the Lewis family’s estate this time.”
There was a long silence. The gravity of Nash’s words hung in the air like a storm cloud, and the proprietor seemed to shrink under the weight of the revelation.
“But why would he go after Herman? The Lewis family has no grievances with him,” Nash added, his tone reflecting a sharp edge of curiosity and suspicion. “There’s only one reason I can think of—someone hired him. The Kleins must’ve had something to do with this.”
The proprietor staggered back a few steps, his legs giving way as he tried to process what Nash was saying. He mumbled in disbelief, “How… How did this happen… He… He promised me that he would never do anything harmful again.”
His voice wavered with regret and sorrow as memories of better days flooded back. The man had been so proud of his son. Wesley had joined the army on his own merit, making a name for himself. He had been the pride of their family, a rising star with so much potential. But then everything fell apart.
His son had made a grave mistake during training, failing to execute an explosion correctly, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of several fellow soldiers. That failure led to Wesley’s expulsion from the army, and the family was forced to hide in the countryside to avoid scandal.
Then, Wesley disappeared. The family’s worst fears were confirmed when they heard of his involvement in a horrific crime. To quell the turmoil and protect their name, the proprietor had sought the help of his younger brother, Jade, who had taken his mother’s surname. Together, they had orchestrated Wesley’s fake death and used his death certificate to sever all ties with their family.
The proprietor had thought that after returning to Somer, Wesley would finally lead a peaceful life. But now, everything was shattered. Wesley had not only resurfaced but had committed an unforgivable crime once again.
The weight of the truth hit the proprietor with full force, his body shaking as he fought to maintain his composure. “I… I never thought this would happen. My son… He’s become a monster…”
Nash’s expression hardened, his voice low but steady. “Your son’s actions have led to countless deaths. I won’t let him get away with it.”
But the proprietor was already crumbling, his worst fears realized. Wesley’s legacy, once full of promise, was now forever tainted by violence and betrayal.
