Chapter 176
Nash’s mind raced as Angelica explained the situation. He had heard of Sky Blade Group before—whispers in the underworld about a mercenary group formed by the nations of Somer, Mandagor, and Yvory. Fewer than 300 members, but formidable in strength. If they were behind the recent bombing at the Lewis family estate, it would make sense that they were also connected to Cain’s actions against Herman.
“I should be able to… but…” Angelica’s voice faltered as doubt crept into her mind. She paused, visibly hesitant. It wasn’t that she lacked the resolve to find answers—it was just that this wasn’t a simple case. The man she was about to call had once been her everything, and now, there was only bitterness between them.
Her fingers hovered over her phone for a moment before she let out a breath and dialed his number. If she was going to provide any useful information, she needed to put aside whatever pride or hesitation remained.
“Hello, Angelica?” The voice on the other end of the line was deep and magnetic, sending a familiar shiver down her spine.
It had been over a year since she had heard it, and her heart skipped a beat. “A-Are you doing well?” she stammered, a nervousness creeping into her words. She immediately regretted her hesitation.
“You wouldn’t call just to reminisce, would you?” His tone was cold, and there was no warmth, no familiarity. It was as if all the affection they had shared had vanished into the air.
Angelica felt a pang of hurt but quickly steeled herself. “You know about what happened in Jonford, right?”
“Jonford? What happened in Jonford?” Grayson asked, his voice betraying nothing.
“There was an explosion at the Lewis family’s estate in Jonford. Nearly 50 people were killed!” Angelica’s voice was icy, tinged with accusation.
The silence on the other end was thick. Then, Grayson spoke, his tone indifferent, “You know it yourself that Sky Blade doesn’t take on missions in Somer, Mandagor, and Yvory!”
Angelica’s patience snapped. “I found a high-explosive grenade from Sky Blade at the explosion site. The Lewises who died also showed symptoms of organ failure due to poisoning. How do you explain that?” Her words were sharp, cutting through the distance between them.
There was a long pause before Grayson’s response came, colder than before. “We’re not in a relationship anymore. I don’t have to explain anything to you.”
“Grayson…” Angelica called his name, anger and hurt mixing in her voice. How had things changed so drastically?
“If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up,” Grayson said flatly.
The call was almost too much for her. She had once believed in the man on the other end of the line. They had been inseparable, partners in every sense of the word. Now, he was nothing more than a stranger, indifferent to her plea.
Taking a deep breath, Angelica lowered her pride. “Just… just do me a favor. Help me find out who wants to harm the Lewises…”
Before she could say anything more, the line went dead.
Angelica stared at her phone in disbelief. The heartless click of the hang-up left her reeling, but she couldn’t afford to waste time mourning the man she had lost. There was still work to be done.
Meanwhile, across the world in a suburban villa in Mandagor, Grayson sat on the edge of his bed, his cold expression betraying little emotion. A flicker of something—perhaps guilt—crossed his face, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared. With a calm, almost detached look, he made another call.
“Gray!” The voice on the other end sounded urgent. “Did you locate Wesley Walker?”
“No,” Grayson replied, his voice clipped. “This guy might have really betrayed the organization. He even took a lot of our equipment.”
Grayson’s gaze turned cold. “He probably went to Somer. Gather a few people and get him back.”
“Okay, Gray!” came the response.
Back in the conference room of Jonford People’s Hospital, Angelica recounted the contents of her phone call to the others. She knew the information was crucial, but her emotions were still raw from the exchange with Grayson.
Governor Jade’s face was stern, his resolve unshaken. “I don’t care who they are. This explosion killed nearly 50 people. They must pay a heavy price!”
Nash nodded in agreement, his mind already working on the next steps. Grayson’s response may have been evasive, but the connection between Sky Blade and the bombing could not be ignored. There was more at play here, and he was determined to uncover the truth, no matter where it led.
