Chapter 174
In the hospital’s conference room, the atmosphere was heavy with tension. More than a dozen doctors kept their heads low, reflecting the grim nature of the situation. The few bodyguards who had been outside the villa had survived, their injuries mostly minor, but the rest of the Lewis family had been caught in the deadly explosion.
The survivors—those who had been inside the villa—had been poisoned by a vast amount of toxins that had infiltrated their bodies. Despite every effort to save them, the doctors could do little more than confirm the hopelessness of the situation. Many had already passed on their way to the hospital, and those who were still alive had little chance of survival.
Mr. Dean, the lead doctor, reported somberly, detailing the extent of the devastation. “Hubert’s and Harrison’s families are safe. Herman, however, remains in a coma, critically injured. We estimate he won’t make it until tomorrow morning,” he said, his voice thick with the weight of the grim prognosis. “All other members of the Lewis family are dead. Tragically, 29 of the Lewis family’s hired bodyguards have also perished.”
The room fell silent as the news sank in. The shock of such a large-scale tragedy was palpable, and the air seemed thick with unspoken grief.
Governor Jade, his face contorted with anger and frustration, slammed his hand on the table. “This was a premeditated, vicious terrorist attack. We must bring these murderers to justice!” His voice rang with a sense of urgency. The enormity of the attack had not only shaken the city but jeopardized his political career. If he couldn’t handle this situation with the seriousness it demanded, it would cost him dearly.
Henderson, ever the pragmatist, nodded gravely. “I’ll establish a special task force immediately. We need to find whoever is responsible for this, and fast.”
Meanwhile, outside the meeting room, Angelica stood in the hallway, looking tense. She was trying to enter the room but was stopped by two patrollers guarding the door.
“Angelica, the governor and chief are in a meeting,” one of them said, blocking her way.
“I know, but this is important. I need to report something to the chief.”
She shook a sealed plastic bag in her hand, the contents of which were enough to make her expression dark and serious. Inside the bag was a thick metal tube—roughly the size of a thumb—something that clearly didn’t belong.
“What is that?” one of the patrollers asked, his tone wary.
“This is a detonator I found at the scene of the explosion at the Lewis estate,” Angelica said without any change in her expression, her voice cool but firm.
The two patrollers exchanged nervous glances, clearly uncomfortable with the situation. “Angelica… you can’t bring that in here. What if it explodes?” one of them stammered, his face pale with fear.
Angelica frowned. “It’s a dud. Relax.”
Despite her assurance, the two guards were still uneasy. One of them reprimanded her sharply, “Even if it’s a dud, it’s still dangerous! Take it away, or we’ll have to take action. Don’t make us do something we’ll regret.”
Angelica sighed, but reluctantly agreed. “Fine, I’ll wait outside then.” She turned as if to leave, but then, without warning, she pivoted back and darted past the patrollers in a swift move. Before they could react, she was already inside the meeting room.
“Angelica!” one of the patrollers called out, alarmed, but it was too late.
Inside the conference room, the conversation was abruptly interrupted as Angelica burst in, drawing everyone’s attention. The atmosphere shifted from one of focus and concern to shock.
Henderson’s face immediately contorted with anger. “Which team are you from? What do you think you’re doing?” His voice was sharp, demanding an explanation as he glared at the two patrollers, clearly disappointed in their inability to prevent her from entering.
Angelica held up the plastic bag, her demeanor calm despite the chaos she had just caused. “My name is Angelica White, and I’m from the Ninth Team. I have something important to report.” She stepped forward, her gaze unwavering.
The two male patrollers stood frozen, pale with fear as they watched Angelica, realizing they had failed in their duty to stop her.
Henderson, now seething with frustration, slammed his hand on the table. “Can’t you see I’m in a meeting? Didn’t your team leader teach you any manners?” He glared at the two men, his voice laced with fury. “What are you two doing standing around? Get her out of here now!”
The patrollers hesitated, then moved toward Angelica, each grabbing one of her arms, their faces pale. They had no choice but to remove her from the room, but Angelica wasn’t done yet. The weight of her report was too important to let slip by unnoticed.
One of the guards gripped her arm, ready to drag her out, but Angelica struggled free with a swift movement, her eyes focused and unyielding. She had no intention of letting anyone stop her from delivering the crucial information she had.
The meeting room fell into an uncomfortable silence as the patrollers flanked Angelica. All eyes were on her, and the tension in the room was thick enough to be cut with a knife.
