Chapter 175
“Hold on…” Nash’s voice cut through the tension as the two patrollers moved to escort Angelica out.
They paused and turned their gaze toward Henderson, who, though confused, didn’t dare to defy Nash. He simply gestured for the two to let Angelica stay for the moment.
Nash’s gaze fixed on the sealed bag in Angelica’s hand. His voice was calm as he asked, “Did you find this at the Lewis family’s estate?”
Angelica, grateful for Nash’s intervention, nodded. “Yes… This is a highly explosive black-tech detonator. Although small in size, it’s extremely powerful and contains highly toxic substances.”
The words seemed to hit like a punch. Henderson’s face drained of color, and he stammered, panic edging into his voice. “W-Why did you bring this here? Get it out of here…”
The weight of the detonator in the room was enough to make anyone uneasy. If it detonated, they would all be at risk. Henderson was already seething with anger, his mind made up to fire Angelica as soon as the meeting ended.
But Angelica remained calm and steady. “The detonator is damaged. It won’t explode,” she quickly explained. She would never have dared to carry such a dangerous object unless she had confirmation from the bomb disposal team that it was safe.
Henderson was not placated. His voice rose again, “Isn’t it poisonous? Get it out… Get it out!” His authority was being undermined in front of everyone, and he was not handling it well.
Angelica, trying to keep her composure, replied, “The poison in the explosive only works when it’s heated to produce gas. It’s safe now.”
But Henderson’s frustration only grew. Slamming his hand on the table, he barked, “Can’t you understand what I’m saying? I told you to get out… Right now… Get out!”
In contrast to Henderson’s shouting, Nash’s voice remained gentle, almost soothing. “Do you know this type of detonator well?”
His calm tone seemed to overpower Henderson’s anger, creating a moment of stillness. Realizing that Nash intended to allow Angelica to stay, Henderson was left with little choice. With a resigned sigh, he turned to Governor Jade. “Governor, for your safety, we should leave first.”
Jade, however, remained unshaken. “I trust her. If she says the detonator won’t explode, then we’re safe. Perhaps this detonator is the key to solving your case.”
Henderson sighed, his irritation boiling over but his hands tied. He obediently sat back in his chair, frustration etched on his face. As he pulled out his phone, he typed a quick message to HR to have Angelica’s status as a patroller revoked.
Angelica gave Nash a grateful glance, and with a deep breath, she began to speak. “My ex-boyfriend used to work for a mercenary group. He once showed me this kind of detonator and told me that this technology is exclusive to their group.”
Nash, unphased, took a sip of water before asking calmly, “Which mercenary group did your ex-boyfriend work for?”
“Sky Blade Group,” Angelica answered, her lips pressed into a tight line.
The mention of Sky Blade caused her expression to darken. A twinge of unease flickered across her face, a mix of regret and unresolved emotions.
She continued, her voice a bit softer now. “We were childhood sweethearts. We both had a sense of justice growing up, and we even planned to go to the police academy together. We got accepted into the Capiton Police Academy, but he disappeared the day before we were supposed to start school. It wasn’t until I was almost done with my own graduation that he reached out to me again. By then, he had become a top mercenary known across the world.”
Her voice faltered for a moment as memories of their time together resurfaced. “We dated for a while after that, but things changed. The man I knew was gone. The money, the power—he became consumed by it. He was involved in dangerous war zones, doing anything for profit. I tried to get him to leave Sky Blade, but he wouldn’t listen. In the end, we broke up. It was the only way.”
Nash, still calm, leaned forward slightly. “So, you suspect that Sky Blade is behind this attack?”
Angelica nodded firmly, her gaze unwavering. “Yes. Even if it’s not Sky Blade directly, it’s definitely linked to them. Their technology, their methods… it all points back to them. They’re involved in this somehow. And now that this attack has threatened the stability of Jonford, I feel compelled to find out who’s behind it and make them pay for the lives lost.”
Nash’s eyes narrowed slightly as he processed her words. “Can you contact your ex-boyfriend?”
Angelica hesitated for a moment, then shook her head. “I don’t know if I can reach him now. After everything that happened, we haven’t spoken in years. But I can try.”
Her voice was tinged with a sense of determination. This was no longer about her past or her broken relationship—it was about the lives that had been taken, and the justice that had to be served.
