Chapter 199
As Angelica recalled the phone call between Wesley and Kale, the sequence of events played out in her mind. Kale had hesitated for only three seconds before Wesley had figured it out, his sharp observation skills never failing. Given Wesley’s ability to predict movements, it seemed increasingly unlikely he would be foolish enough to visit the cemetery himself.
The trio remained hidden behind the tombstone, watching the burly man. He had finished burning the offerings and now sat in front of the grave, lighting a cigarette. He took a long drag, exhaling the smoke before retrieving a bottle of white wine from the bag beside him and taking a swig.
Felicity squinted at the scene. “What if…” Her voice trailed off as a thought formed. “What if he’s doing the opposite?”
Angelica glanced at her. “What do you mean?”
Felicity’s words hung in the air like a heavy truth. “She means Wesley probably predicted our plan!” she replied.
Nash frowned, his brows furrowing with doubt. If Wesley had anticipated their move and expected them to stake out the cemetery, then the man sitting in front of them might not be Wesley at all, but one of his men. Nash was sharp enough to recognize the possibility that the man knew they were watching and had intentionally misled them.
If they made a move and arrested this man, they would only alert the real Wesley, who could slip away unnoticed.
Felicity, however, wasn’t convinced. “If they were just here to visit the grave, they would’ve left after burning the offerings. Why would they sit down to smoke and drink?”
Before either Angelica or Nash could stop her, Felicity dashed forward like an arrow. Angelica quickly followed behind her.
“Wesley…” Felicity muttered under her breath as she approached the grave.
The burly man, who had been sitting across from the tombstone, slowly lifted his head. His eyes narrowed with curiosity. “Who are you?”
“Sagen’s Deputy Chief Inspector,” Felicity responded coolly.
The burly man smirked and shook his head. “I’m not Wesley…”
Felicity’s lips curled into a sardonic smile. “You’re Wesley. You’re leaving tomorrow, so you came in the middle of the night to visit your first love…”
The burly man stared at her like she was out of her mind. “Are you crazy? This is my younger sister… I just got to Bronze Town today. What’s wrong with coming to visit her?”
Younger sister? Felicity’s face froze, her lips tightening in disbelief. Her mind raced. This couldn’t be right.
Angelica, who had been standing quietly, spoke up in a low voice. “Then, you know Wesley Walker, right?”
The man nodded. “Yes, that’s my sister’s first boyfriend.”
Felicity felt her stomach drop. The realization hit her with force. “Mission failed,” she muttered under her breath.
This man was indeed working with Wesley. The real Wesley had likely seen them already. Their mission was compromised.
Across the lotus pond, a figure perched high up in the branches of a large tree. A man in a hoodie, concealed in the darkness, held a sniper rifle steady, his eye locked onto the burly man below through the rifle’s scope. His finger hovered above the trigger, his breath steady, but his gaze remained fixed on the scope.
Through his wireless Bluetooth earpiece, he could hear the live conversation between Felicity and the burly man. His eyes danced between the figures of Felicity and Angelica, but it was the image on the tombstone that caught his attention. The girl with pigtails, her face radiant with an innocent smile, sent a shiver through him. His hands began to tremble.
“Wesley…” he whispered under his breath, a hint of recognition in his voice.
But just as his focus intensified, a rustling sound came from beneath the tree. His heart skipped a beat, and without hesitation, he shifted his aim to the source of the noise.
Bang!
The gunshot rang through the night, its sharp echo splitting the silence of the town.
The burly man in the cemetery flinched violently at the sound, instinctively ducking and covering his head, fearing the worst. He had been warned—if he misspoke or did anything wrong, he’d be killed. In that instant, the sound of the gunshot made him think he had made a grave mistake.
Felicity, hearing the shot, whipped her head around and saw a flash of movement across the lotus pond. Without thinking, she turned on her heels and sprinted from the cemetery at lightning speed, her heart pounding in her chest.
What had just happened?
