Chapter 447
“I’m fine, really,” Claude said gently, removing Sophie’s hand from his arm with a soft smile. “How have you and Jacob been lately? Honestly, I hope Jacob keeps a close watch on you—your impulsiveness worries me. I wouldn’t want you to accidentally say something to the media.”
Jacob smiled confidently. “I’ll keep an eye on her, Mr. Claude.”
Claude chuckled. “You’re probably the only one who can.”
“Is there anything else you need help with?” Jacob asked, his loyalty clear to anyone watching.
Claude studied him thoughtfully for a moment. Jacob met his gaze without flinching.
“Just take care of Sophie for me,” Claude finally said with a smile. “You don’t have to worry about me.”
“Well, that’s true. Sophie and I feel better knowing you’re alright,” Jacob replied sincerely.
Claude turned to Sophie. “You should go home with him.”
Hearing that Claude was okay, Sophie was ready to leave, but she added, “You know, everything that happened is in the past now. We all hope it doesn’t bother you anymore. We were so worried.”
Claude patted her head gently. “You’ve really grown up. But you should go home with Jacob—I’m going to stay here a bit longer.”
Looking around the modest surroundings, Sophie hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Alright. We’ll be waiting for you at home.”
They talked a little more until Sophie felt reassured about Claude’s state of mind. Just as she was about to leave, she turned back. “I know you called Olivia.”
Jacob’s eyes flickered briefly. He watched Claude carefully, though Claude didn’t notice.
After a brief pause, Claude admitted, “Yes, I did. I told her to take care.”
Sophie was about to respond when Lilah interrupted gently, “Let’s go for a walk, Ms. Sophie. The air is great outside.”
Sophie agreed and left with Lilah. Jacob started to follow, but Claude stopped him.
“Jacob, please stay. I want to talk to you.”
Jacob turned back to Claude, and Sophie looked on with hope—perhaps this was the start of Claude mentoring him. Feeling encouraged, she walked away, leaving the two alone.
“I understand what you’re trying to say, Jacob,” Claude began.
Jacob bowed his head slightly. “I’m here to help.”
“I know. You’re smart, and I can tell you’ll be one of us,” Claude remarked.
“I’m honored to hear that.”
“I heard Olivia was your ex,” Claude said carefully.
“We broke up a long time ago. It was never serious—we’re just friends now,” Jacob replied quickly, steering the conversation.
Claude nodded, satisfied. “That’s good to hear. I trust you’ll look after Sophie well. And I’d prefer if you didn’t get involved with Olivia again.”
Jacob understood the implication immediately. Keeping his humble expression, he said, “Understood.”
Claude smiled as he sipped his tea. “Good.”
Meanwhile, Sophie wandered around outside the monastery, watching the gate and waiting for Jacob’s return.
