Chapter 452
Naomi couldn’t tell who was calling from where she sat, so she asked gently, “Working again, Tyler?”
“No. It’s my mother,” he answered bluntly, grabbing the phone and rising to his feet before stepping out of the room.
Naomi’s hands froze mid-knitting, catching the nurse’s curious glance.
Tyler answered the call, and Ana wasted no time cutting to the chase. “I sent Olivia with your afternoon tea. Have you seen it yet?”
“I told her to leave it at the front desk. Didn’t she?”
Ana chuckled coldly. “I told her to give it to you personally. If you’re not there, tough luck. She’ll have to wait until you get back.”
Tyler’s face darkened, the threat clear in her words.
“What do you think you’re doing?” he growled, voice low and sharp.
Ana laughed. “Sending you afternoon tea. Didn’t I say that?”
Was Tyler afraid? No. But Ana knew how much Tyler and Naomi, the two people who should care most about the pregnant young woman, wanted to protect her and the baby. The thought of losing them was unbearable.
“You’re unbelievable,” Tyler said coldly.
“Oh, you can always choose not to come,” Ana said sweetly.
Tyler scowled.
“Think it over. If you’re really that busy, stay there. She can wait.”
With that, Ana ended the call, leaving Tyler alone with the ringing beep.
He lowered the phone from his ear, his forehead furrowed though his face remained stoic.
Naomi waited quietly for him to return.
About five minutes later, Tyler came back in. She watched him closely, unsure if the call had been from Ana or someone else—and what her true intentions were.
Tyler didn’t sit down immediately. After a moment of thought, he said, “I need to be out for a while. The nurse will keep you company.”
Naomi was startled. “Did something happen?”
Whatever Ana had said couldn’t have been harmless. Naomi suspected Ana was stirring trouble, upset that Tyler had been spending so much time with her lately.
“Don’t worry about it. Just rest,” Tyler replied shortly, offering no further explanation.
Naomi instinctively gripped the edge of her blanket, studying his face. She could tell he was hiding something. “What did she do this time?”
“Nothing. Please, rest.”
With that, Tyler left.
The ward, always quiet and dim, felt even lonelier without him. Naomi shivered with a sudden chill of solitude.
“Ms. Naomi? Shall we continue with our knitting?”
Meanwhile, Tyler wore a scowl since leaving the hospital.
Back home, Linda, who had expected him to be out later, was surprised. “You’re back already?”
